    How We Calculate Flight Time

    Our flight time calculator uses the Haversine formula to determine the great-circle distance between any two airports — the shortest path along Earth's curved surface. This is the same mathematical principle used by airlines and air traffic control for route planning.

    We then estimate flight duration by dividing the distance by a typical jet cruising speed of 850 km/h (528 mph), which reflects the average for modern commercial aircraft like the Boeing 787, Airbus A350, and Boeing 777. To account for real-world conditions, we add 30–45 minutes for taxi time, takeoff, initial climb, descent, approach, and landing — giving you a realistic gate-to-gate estimate rather than just air time.

    The result is presented as a range because actual flight times vary based on wind conditions (particularly the jet stream), air traffic control routing, weather diversions, and aircraft type. Our database covers 290+ major international airports across six continents.

    Factors That Affect Flight Duration

    Jet Stream & Wind Patterns

    The jet stream flows west-to-east at 100–250 km/h at cruising altitude. Eastbound flights ride this tailwind and arrive faster; westbound flights fight headwinds and take longer. A New York to London flight averages 6h 45m, while the return is typically 8h 00m.

    Aircraft Type & Speed

    Wide-body jets cruise at Mach 0.84–0.86 (~900 km/h), while narrow-body aircraft like the Boeing 737 cruise closer to 830 km/h. Ultra-long-haul routes often use the most fuel-efficient wide-bodies.

    Air Traffic & Routing

    ATC may assign longer routes to maintain safe separation, especially near busy airports. Oceanic tracks across the Atlantic change daily based on wind patterns, and flights may detour around restricted airspace or severe weather systems.

    Airport Congestion

    Ground delays at major hubs (Heathrow, JFK, Dubai) can add 10–30 minutes of taxi time. Holding patterns during peak arrival times also extend total gate-to-gate duration.
